THE LIVING WORLD EXHIBITION

Le MERIDIEN in Malta encourages creativity, promotes the arts and unlocks your destination with an inspiring perspective.

The 5 star hotel, as a creative hub that highlights arts and culture on the island, presents The Living World painting exhibition by Chloe Waterfield. This grasping display of art will be on show at the hotel throughout July.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

Born in England and raised in Malta, Chloe Waterfield belongs to this upcoming generation of artists who have roots everywhere. Ever since she began experimenting with art, she has sought her inspiration from all corners of the globe. To her, nature is limitless and without borders. This powerful message expresses itself in her art. Chloe has been determined to succeed from a very young age. She took charge of her career in a committed fashion by hosting a series of exhibitions and readings called The Contemporaries. She actively participated in collective exhibitions including the Dolmen Arts Expression in 2011.

With her first solo exhibition The Art Instinct in 2013, Chloe Waterfield's style finally came to the fore. Her works can be described as semi-abstract pieces inspired by Paleolithic art. But not only. They are also colourful celebrations of the world's endangered species inspired by Franz Marc. This solo exhibition was a launching pad for her international career which has since seen her works exhibited in the Traces of Life juried show in the US.

Chloe takes her inspiration from artists who have, in their work, made nature more dynamic, including Van Gogh, Franz Marc, Salvador Dali and Georgia O'Keeffe. Her strongest influence, however, comes from the painted caves of Europe. The very beginning of art history, after all.

INSPIRING INNOVATION

Now her career is about to take its next flight with another solo exhibition at Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa. An appealing display targeting the creative hotel guests and visitors of Le Méridien, which she hopes “will have a David Attenborough’s effect on people. I want to show them the beauty and the diversity of nature, to make them appreciate it before it's too late.”

This upcoming exhibition focuses on several of Chloe's signature styles: semi-abstract and vivid Paleolithic-inspired paintings depicting some of the most fascinating species. As an innovative venture for this artist, the exhibition will also include a new series of works: Endangered Peoples focusing on the world's most endangered tribes, unveiling their identity through varied techniques. This is a must-seen for all art enthusiasts in search of new inspiring perspectives.

The Living World exhibition, curated by Joe D. Hamilton, will be on display until the 31st of July at Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa.

Cooking with Reuben

Reuben Grixti, Executive Head Chef at Le MERIDIEN St Julians Hotel & Spa presents:

PACCHERI PANCETTA PASTA

An amazingly tasty pasta dish!

INGREDIENTS

500g paccheri pasta
100g pancetta
40g sundried tomatoes
30g onions
12 ml extra virgin olive oil
50ml white wine
80ml chicken stock
60ml fresh cream
30g fresh spinach

METHOD

Chop the pancetta, the onions and the sundried tomatoes. Heat some extra virgin olive oil in a pan. Add the diced pancetta and the chopped onions. Sauté over a medium heat until the onions are a nice light golden brown. Add the wine and bring to a boil. Continue to boil until your preparation is reduced by half. Add the chicken stock and the chopped sundried tomatoes. Simmer gently for a few minutes. Reserve and keep warm. Cook the pasta in a pot of boiling salted water, stirring occasionally, until Al Dente. This ideal cooking point is soft but holds shape, and is starchy enough for your sauce to stick on to perfection. Drain well and transfer the cooked paccheri into the sauce. Add the fresh cream. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Plate, garnish with fresh spinach tossed in extra virgin olive oil and serve immediately.

Tell us what you think about this recipe and/or if you find ways to personalize it!
Taste this dish at KuDeTa Lounge & Bar, level 3 of the hotel, throughout summer.

A FEAST OF FOOD

Festa Fridays at Le Méridien St Julians hotel & spa
Il-Pjazza outdoor restaurant opens its doors to a typical Maltese summer next week.

On Friday 8th of June, il-Pjazza – Le Méridien’s outdoor restaurant will officially open for the summer season and will once again celebrate the colourful ways of wining and dining in Malta with the come-back of its popular "FESTA FRIDAY". Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa in Balluta Bay invites his summer clientele to lay back in a typical set-up inspired by the Festa atmosphere that sprinkles the island throughout the summer months.

The name "il-Pjazza" was born quite naturally when the hotel launched this original venue last year. What better term could describe a typical gathering, at the heart of the village feasts in Malta?
Il-Pjazza is located on a wide terrace of the hotel’s premises (level 1) and opens every Friday for this much-awaited FESTA that is a delight for both Maltese patrons, who get the chance to indulge in each and every one of their favourite dishes, and for overseas visitors who can unveil the many culinary secrets of Malta’s cuisine all in one go.

ASSOCIATE FUNDRAISING FOR UNICEF

In support of Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ 5th annual associate fundraising campaign Road to Awareness, Le Méridien St Julians is organising a fun Car Wash and Car Boot Sale on Saturday 2nd June, in the outdoor parking in front of the hotel’s reception.

Le Meridien Malta for UnicefThis year’s ‘Road to Awareness’ campaign raises money for UNICEF’s Early Childhood Care and Education programme in Ethiopia. The aim of the project is to provide the most disadvantaged children in rural communities with pre-primary education so they are better prepared to start going to school. Indeed, in Ethiopia, over 80% of the population live in rural communities and many children have to survive on less than US$1 a day. A lack of education and no access to pre-school is seen as one of the key barriers to a child not being able to reach their full potential and escape a life of poverty.

The money raised through Starwood’s ‘Road to Awareness’ campaign - which includes local fundraising initiatives across hotels in Europe, Africa and the Middle East as well as an annual fundraising bike ride - will help tackle this by giving thousands of the most vulnerable children in Ethiopia access to pre-school and the chance of a brighter future. Starwood’s support will contribute to the construction of 10 pre-schools, provide pre-school education to up to 50,000 children aged six and enable UNICEF to train 10,000 young instructors to aide their learning.

On Friday 10th of June, il-Pjazza – Le Méridien’s new outdoor restaurant will officially open and unlock the colourful ways of wining and dining in Malta with its very first "FESTA FRIDAY". With this new venue, Le Méridien St Julians invites his summer clientele to lay back in a pleasant set-up inspired by the Festa atmosphere that sprinkles the island throughout summer.

"We wanted to widen our dining options", explains Andre Scerri, F&B Director at Le Méridien St Julians. "It had become obvious that we needed to present an original summer venue and the idea of re-creating the concept of our island’s popular Festa in a 5 star environment imposed itself to us".

The name "il-Pjazza" was also born quite naturally when the hotel’s team brainstormed about the Maltese way of living. What better term could describe a typical meeting point, at the heart of the village feasts in Malta?

When you come to a fork in the road, take it!

January Vibe by Alexis Callus

So what do we get up to in January, after celebrating nearly for a whole month in December? Well, there is a lot to do with Valentine’s Day round the corner, together with Carnival and Easter coming so early this year! Just as we detoxify from our Christmas ‘spirit’, more festivities are on their way. I get the feeling that something grand is up for the weekend of the 13th and 14th of February, as the hotel will be in a party mood with 2 special events on both nights.

The 12-16th February sees the official Carnival celebrations of Malta taking place. A great atmosphere will be awaiting the crowds in the Valletta / Floriana area with the main activities falling on the last days. The rest of the island sees many other parties taking place and also smaller more local Carnival events in village cores. These festivities, in various forms, have taken place since Grandmaster Piero de Ponte introduced them in 1534.
