Ambassador’s Award for Environmental Excellence

St Julians, Malta – June 6th, 2011

Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa in Malta has recently been awarded the “2011 Ambassador’s Award for Environmental Excellence” by the Embassy of the United States of America in Valletta. This prestigious award recognizes firms that epitomize environmental excellence by adopting best practices protecting our environment and promoting sustainability.

Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa forms part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, a Global hospitality company that continuously stresses on the importance of being a leader in terms of environmental sustainability in all of its hotels worldwide. With its Environment Sustainability Policy statement, Starwood emphasizes on various topics such as conserving natural resources, minimizing waste and pollution, enhancing indoor environment quality, establishing and reporting on key environment performance indicators, raising environment awareness amongst hotel associates, hotel guests and local communities. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has committed to a 30% reduction in energy usage and a 20% reduction in water usage by 2020. Specific deliverables are required from each hotel and this international company expects nothing less than 100% commitment from its properties in adopting key sustainability initiatives.
Through the committed leadership of Joseph Zammit, Security and Health & Safety Manager at Le Méridien St Julians in Malta, the hotel already actively contributes in energy conservation, controlling its carbon footprint by reducing the CO2 emissions. Le Méridien St Julians also boasts a waste management program and encourages customers and employees alike to participate in environmental activities organized by the hotel. Increasing the percentage of local products in all purchasing aspects is also a key part of the program.

To involve the local community in green initiatives has really become a priority for the hotel in the past couple of years. Indeed, the hotel management strives to implement activities that are in accordance to the policies of the company, yet that have been tailor-made based on the hotel needs and on the local environmental legislations.

The announcement and presentation of the award took place on the UN-sponsored World Environment Day on Monday 6th of June, at the Embassy of the United States of America in Valletta. The Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Richard M. Mills, Jr. hosted the ceremony and emphasized on the importance of corporate leaders promoting environmentally friendly technologies and adopting best practices.

There are many initiatives that one can take in order to support the environment”, states Joseph Zammit who is to praise for the successful development of the environmental initiatives at the hotel. “The biggest challenge is obviously financial and the lack of resources may slow us down. But one should not fear to push doors and move forward despite any difficulty, in order to have a safer and better world for all of us to live in. This is everyone’s responsibility and even more the one of corporate companies that can educate their staff and customers alike.

Le Méridien St Julians has quite a few projects in the pipeline. One of them is the introduction of Infrared Repellator films. The project is intended to help minimize the amount of direct sun heat that is generated through the window panes in the hotel lobby, therefore saving on a lot of energy induced by the air condition system.

Last week, Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa was also awarded with a “Gold Award for Sustainable Tourism” by Travelife International Tourism Services Limited. This 5 star hotel in Balluta Bay definitely leads the way on the local corporate scene in terms of environmental sustainability.
