40% drop in Le Méridien St Julians’ organic waste

First local hotel to achieve GreenPak certification in waste management

Thanks to Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa’s decision to embark on Starwood’s Green Project, the hotel has been awarded GreenPak Malta’s certification in waste management, the first local hotel to achieve this certification.

Organic waste has since fallen by 40 per cent and GreenPak have offered to extend its free collection of the separated waste of Le Méridien St Julians by a further six months.

Joseph Zammit, Security and Health and Safety Manager, said GreenPak offered free training to the hotel’s staff before the separation programme began. "We had a high level of participation from the employees, who attended a three-hour session once a week over five weeks", he explained.

Daniel Debono, Project Manager, and Kareena Mutch, Training Co-ordinator, at GreenPak Malta delivered the training.

Hotel Manager Angela Saliba was instrumental in introducing the programme: "In line with Starwood Group Policy, Mr Zammit was appointed Starwood’s Green Project Environmental Sustainability Champion. This involves ensuring that the hotel complies with all the energy-saving and environmental sustainable programmes, including waste management."

Originally, on its own initiative, Le Méridien St Julians only separated glass. It now also separates carton and paper; tins and cans; and plastic bottles and cups. All the organic waste that remains has now fallen to 60 per cent, which also means a considerable saving in costs to have this waste disposed of.
